Floods are a common, highly destructive hazard. Flooding can go beyond damage to and loss of personal property. It can contaminate water supplies spreading water borne diseases, overwhelm drainage/sewer systems, disrupt power supplies, destroy crops, close roads, and create clean drinking water and food shortages. Repairs to infrastructure such as roads, bridges and public utilities can take a significant time to complete. Local economy may be devastated.
