Droughts are a period of abnormally low precipitation resulting in a water shortage. It is a common occurrence with at least one region in North America experiencing drought conditions in any given year. Most areas experience some level of drought eventually. Drought conditions are usually accompanied by increased temperatures, elevated fire hazard, insect infestation, plant disease, crop failure, decreased livestock production, and damage to wildlife. The economy is effected through higher food prices, loss of tourism, and increased unemployment rates.
